There are two main elements that require licensing:

Licensing entertainment

If you are planning on staging event such as sporting events, plays, films or dances you may need a public entertainment licence. Again your local authority can advice you on this.

As a rule of thumb statutory notice periods tend to depend on the size of the event. A general guide is:

  • Small events such as an auction would require 28 days.
  • Medium events such as a carnival. 28 days.
  • A large event is anything with over 5000 attendees, possible road closures and entertainment licenses. Six to nine months.

Licensing Alcohol

If you are planning on selling or providing alcohol you will need an alcohol license. Firstly check with your venue to see if they already have a license. If not it is possible in certain circumstances to obtain an occasional permission through the licensing justices at the local magistrate’s court.
