So what next?
Point 1
The first process to work through is calculating the rough value of your money and belongings. Follow the link and either print off a copy or work on-line. Value your assets. This is a simple way of identifying your assets and calculating your estate value minus your debts.
Point 2
Then you need to decide the type of gift you wish to bequeath to STARS. We have mentioned three of the most recognised types of gift and we have put together a short document with correct legal wording for you to use and take to your chosen solicitor. Legal Wording
Point 3
At this stage you need to make a note of your executors. It is very important that when you are choosing your executors, usually two, that you choose people you trust. In a lot of occasions this would be your partner, best friend, adult members of your family or professional adviser. It can be someone that you intend to leave a gift to or not. The person/s you choose must be approached before you decide, as this is quite a responsibility. A few of their responsibilities will include collecting together all your assets, deal with the paperwork, pay off the debts from your estate and make sure that everything is carried out according to your wishes and the law.
Point 4
This is the point at which you need to collect together any questions you need to ask your solicitor. A few examples follow:
- What happens to joint bank accounts and any other jointly owned property?
- Are you married or divorced?
- If you have young dependants, who do you want looking after them after you have gone?
- What if you have no family left?
Point 5
You are now ready to make your Will and need to find yourself a solicitor. There are number of tips to getting the best out of your meeting. Firstly always ask friends and work colleagues for recommendation of solicitors they have used. Then do not be afraid to ask up front for the cost of drawing up a Will. This could be a fixed fee or negotiable (I.e. time dependent). Prices can vary considerably and it is always worth shopping around. Once you have found a solicitor arrange an appointment, if you find it difficult visiting their offices for whatever reason, ask for a home visit, most will be happy to oblige.
Do you intend on making a pledge to STARS?
If you have decided to make a pledge to STARS we would like to know so that we can make a record. Please let us know by filling out the on-line Pledge Form/enquiry form or by calling 01789 451822 and speaking to Matt.
Point 6
Finally see your solicitor, taking all the information you will have collected following these guidance notes. The process is very simple. The solicitor will ask you a set of questions, which will allow them to create a draft Will. Once you have agreed the content you will be asked to sign it in the presence of two independent witnesses. Finished.
We hope the guidance notes have proved useful and if you require any further guidance or wish to discuss your potential financial support of STARS then please contact us either via the Enquiry form. Or on 01789 451830.
