Maddy making music for STARS.jpg)
Maddy Guthrie, 17 years of age, from Inverurie in Aberdeenshire, was diagnosed with RAS. After playing the oboe for six years she decided a practice-a-thon would be the perfect way to do something for STARS. Maddy was sponsored to practice for 40 minutes everyday for two weeks.
"I AM FOREVER GRATEFUL THAT MY OWN CONDITION, SYNCOPE, WAS DIAGNOSED CORRECTLY AND NOT SIMPLY PRESUMED TO BE EPILEPSY.”
Sweepstake Baby
Charles Vickery ran a sweepstake at work for his first baby’s birth weight. The idea quickly escalated into three such competitions – one for weight, one for the date and one for the time of day. The competition created great excitement at work and everyone had their own theory on what weight the baby would be and at what time of day the baby would arrive. Their beautiful son Daniel was born on the 4th August at 8.08am weighing in at 6 lbs 14.5 oz.
“I AM REALLY PLEASED TO HAVE USED THE BIRTH OF MY SON AS A WAY OF SUPPORTING STARS AND RAISING AWARENESS AT THE SAME TIME.”
Having a Ball
Bridgette Nottingham and family organised a Grand charity dinner and dance in aid of STARS! There was a band, raffle and auction and to top it off there was a magician who left everyone in fits of laughter. The ball raised a staggering £2700 for STARS.
“IT WAS A CHALLENGE TO ORGANISE, AND WE DID IT IN JUST TEN WEEKS, BUT THE REWARDS, PLEASURE, FUN AND AMAZING FUNDRAISING FOR A CHARITY SO CLOSE TO MY HEART WAS WELL WORTH IT!”
Girls putting their best feet forward for a worthy cause
Hannah Nicholson was diagnosed with Reflex Syncope and along with her close friend, Alison Vowles she has completed the Bath half marathon to fundraise for STARS, aswell as raising the profile of the charity.
“I TELL EVERYONE I MEET THAT I HAVE REFLEX SYNCOPE AND IT IS JUST PART OF ME. WHEN THINGS SEEM HARD AND SYNCOPE IS GETTING YOU DOWN TALK TO SOMEONE, A FRIEND, YOUR PARENTS, A TEACHER OR SOMEONE YOU ARE CLOSE TO, IT ALWAYS HELPS. A PROBLEM SHARED IS A PROBLEM HALVED.”

Glen Kiernan ran the Big Sur Marathon on the Californian Pacific coast in Monterey, all in aid of his sister-in-law Anita who has POTS (Postural Orthostatic Tachycardia).
“I REALLY ADMIRE PEOPLE LIKE ANITA, WHO FACE THE CHALLENGES THAT THEIR CONDITION PRESENTS EVERY DAY…NOW THAT TAKES DETERMINATION AND THAT WILL BE ALL THE INSPIRATION I NEED…”
The youngest solo rower to cross the English Channel

Christopher Shepheard-Walwyn
Christopher became the youngest solo rower to cross the English Channel June 2008 in a one man rowing boat. The enormous respect he earned has been reflected by the support of his school, Canford School, Dorset, and the generosity of the pupils and parents. He has raised nearly £10,000 for STARS. This is an incredible amount and surpassed everyone’s expectations.
Christopher undertook this feat to show his gratitude to STARS for the help and support we have given to his girlfriend Kellie, who suffers with POTS.
